Spring has sprung, and the SHEDDING has begun!

Spring has sprung, and the SHEDDING has begun!

Spring is in the air. The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, the dog is SHEDDING!

There is spring sunlight, warmer weather, and longer days on the way! This also means, your dog is probably ready to shed their winter coat.

While most dogs shed all year round, it is usually most noticeable in the spring. This is sometimes referred to as “blowing coat” or “molting” . Dogs grow warmer coats in the winter to keep warm, and by spring the old dead fur needs to come off. It is a great idea to ask your groomer what kind of brush and/or maintenance is best for your dog. For example:

A curry brush is great for short hair dogs like Pugs and Labs. It collects hair like a magnet and leaves the coat shiny and beautiful. As a bonus, the dogs love how it feels.

Some dogs with double coats, such as German Shepherds and Husky’s would benefit from a de-shedding tool. It is designed to remove the undercoat and loose hair without cutting or damaging the topcoat.

You may set up time to see a groomer or chose to maintain your dogs coat at home. Monthly baths, daily brushing, blow out/de-shed between baths, and feeding a healthy diet are all things you should consider. Properly de-shedding your dog helps your pup be healthy and happy, but also keeps your clothes and furniture clean! Remember some breeds shed more than others, such as Pugs, Labs, Beagles, and German Shepherds. And, while there are some “hypo-allergenic/non-shedding” dogs, you must make sure to do your research. It takes multiple generations before the non-shedding gene is dominant.

Other reasons your dog could be shedding

If you are concerned your dog is shedding too much or notice skin issues you should see your Veterinarian. Stress, allergies, medications, fleas, or immune disease can all be reasons your dog might shed more than usual.
